As promised we returned to Chiricahua National Monument. When we arrived the road was still closed above the Visitor Center. However, the staff felt that they would have it open later in the morning. No promises, but . . .
Ann and Greg did not need a road. They were quickly off on a 7+ mile hike to a part of the Monument called Heart of Rocks. We, being less hike-hardy souls, were content to photograph in and around the campsite and paths that would keep us close to any news of the road opening up.
Fall in the Chiricahuas is not as stunning as in other places. It subtlety adds beauty while not detracting from the Wonderland of Rocks.
New birth, rebirth and color in an area ravaged by fire just three years ago.
I always know when Rick is returning with a great macro shot. He has this, 'I just got a good one' smile on his face. Does it get any better than this?
Just a taste of the wonderment to come. We had no idea that this was just a visual appetizer.
Greg and Ann promised to take lots of pictures. This time I want to put all of their photos together. Their view was quite different than the view we would see later on as we were able to drive to the end of the scenic road. Their images are more 'up close and personal' giving you a chance to go on their hike as well. And, they got images of iconic rock formations that cannot be seen from the top. Ladies first . . .
Just a trailside view.
Black Spiney Lizzard (we think).
Balanced Rock
An outlined image of Balanced Rock. Actually, there are many such rocks in the Chiricahuas. But this must be the big cahuna of balanced rocks!
Lichen imitating a petroglyph.
Duck on a Rock from afar.
Hi Lefty. You look comfortable on Greg's new tripod case.
Would I be smiling if I were hiking in what looks like unstable rock territory? Yep, because it would mean that I could make it 7+ miles!!!
A view we would not get. Also, cloud white-out continued to be a real challenge.
Called Punch and Judy. Greg even gave them a theatre style curtain for their Punch and Judy Show. How thoughtful!
Camel's Head
Love the layering on this one. Depth of field . . . no problem here.
Another view.
Greg's close up of Duck on a Rock.
Thanks to our hikers!! The road to the top, Massai Point, opened up about 10 and we started our drive to the top. Those photos will be in the next post.
