An Alaskan Uncruise

Jon and Phyllis took an 'uncruise' to Alaska and are sharing their favorite photos.  Just what is an 'uncruise'?  Phyllis explained that it is taken on a much smaller ship and the emphasis is on activities like hiking and kayaking.

This is Mendenhall Glacier.  The glacier is about 13.6 miles long.

If you would like a sense of scale . . . those are people on the beach!!  Mendenhall Glacier.

A break-away from the Dawes Glacier located in the fjord named Endicott Arm.

There are steep granite walls, newly exposed by the melting glacier.

Taken at Endicott Arm.  Can you imagine the sound this waterfall makes?

Whales at Five Fingers, a set of rocky islets on Frederick Sound.

While out watching the whales, one came up very close to the boat.  This is a close up of a whale's blow hole!

This image brought back memories of trying to get great photos of puffins in Iceland.  They fly fast and only images taken when they were still and posing seemed to work.  But, I think, Phyllis is on to something here . . . get them before they get to flying speed!

Nice composition!  Taken at Five Fingers.

If you look carefully there is a large piece of the glacier being 'calved' (falling away from the glacier.  It is under the furthermost left arch.  Phyllis was disappointed that she did not capture the splash.  I am impressed she caught the calf in mid-air!

So, after looking at the awesome images, I want to go on an uncruise to Alaska.  Bet you do too.
