Rim in the Sun

The Mogollon Rim was worth another trip. This time there were five of us and you will see our efforts represented below.  Man, this was one helluva fun trip!! Go get something to drink and munch on.  This is a long one!

We started the day with a stop at a small pullout along the Fish Hatchery Road.  This point is above the trailhead for Horton Creek and if you did not know it was there you would miss it.  You can hear the waterfall as soon as you get out of the car.  A very short, but rather steep, hike from the edge of the road to the creek is all it takes. The waterfall is not an Oregon/Washington style waterfall. Nonetheless, we treated it like royalty and as a very good excuse to try out ND filters, camera settings, challenging compositions, etc.

That top rock grabbed my attention.  One wonders how such things are created.

Da Boyz

Interesting compositions getting harder.  Time to get really low!

Well, if not low how about in?  This is a favorite. Thanks Rick.

Nuff of waterfalls.  Off we took for the Rim Road.

As I stood across from this ledge, fascinated by the slit, it occurred to me that I had not really checked out the ledge I was standing on!  After the click I scampered to more solid ground!

One nice thing about the Rim Road is the expansive view.  However, once you tire of dangerous ledges, it is nice to find magic below your feet, in crevices and on the forest floor.

Getting a bit artsy fartsy as Kati would say.  Love this image.

Next up is Wood's Canyon Lake.  Not very many folks there on a Wednesday.  I think the squirrels outnumber the fishermen and photographers.

People are all gone and the canoes neatly stacked.

Mentioned squirrels.  For birders, however, these lakes are a real photo opportunity. We saw blue jays and fishing birds that I cannot identify.  We saw eagles.  The eagles seem to prefer to perch on the branches of tall standing dead trees on the opposite side of the lake.  With long glass you could probably get some really good shots.  We saw birds diving for fish and getting them!  My glass won't get me there and none of us were prepared for the fishing!  If you want to get some great eagle shots, head up to the rim lakes, take a chair, sit lakeside and wait patiently.

Exchange the tackle box for your camera gear and you are set.  This one is for my mom.

Off to Willow Springs Lake.  Each lake is different and each worth your exploration.

Rick is giving you a clue of the trees that these fishing birds and the eagles like to sit in.

So, here is my fun story from this trip.  Lots of folks want to spend photo opportunity time with Tom.  I suspect they hope to learn from him about composition, being more creative, and seeing a photo opportunity in a different way.  Tom does not shoot what we call (in our little studio) the pedestrian postcard.  I get to shoot with Tom a great deal (hahahahaha as I cannot keep up with him)!  The shot below is just all too familiar (anyone who follows this blog might think of pond scum at this point in my story).  What is he doing?!!?!!

Then, he sends me his photos to post.  "What is this?", I inquire.  He smiles.  Yes, we are having fun!  Lots of it. Just know that these two photos are not related. Also know that he never ceases to amaze me!

Do you know what this is?  If so, drop me a note.

Whew!  If you are still with me you are a trooper like us.  We finished the day off by having dinner in Payson at El Rancho.  Then the long trek home.  I want to thank Rick, Barbara and Nancy for joining us in what some might call photo-folly.

Next up is probably Prescott this Saturday, unless I can talk Tom into shooting tomorrow.  So very much appreciate your joining us on these trips.

Lost Dutchman Park

Hot!  Nonetheless, five hearty souls actually paid to get into the park with visions of a great Golden Hour shot of the Superstition Mountain's west face.  We hoped for clouds.  Oh well!   You can watch a short time-lapse of clouds forming and drifting over the Superstitions on my time-lapse page in this website. We got there early to do the time-lapse (read that as more sweating)!

I have been to this spot many times.  Even parked in the same place.  But, the mountain is NEVER the same!!  You can move 10 feet and walk down a short path and all of a sudden the view changes!

We hope you enjoy our trek.  We did.

Did you notice the pretty pink flowers?  I had a very wide lens on when I captured my shot and Rick was sporting his macro lens.  I asked him to come get a photo of the flower. Now that, folks, is a cholla flower!  In August!

One of the magical things about this site is that you can look at the mountain in the gold light and then turn around and get the same gold in a sunset.

We will return to the Superstitions.  Next time we are headed to the Three Sisters and the Peralta Trail.  After it cools off!  Tomorrow we are going back to the Mogollon Rim.  We will have Rick and Barbara with us and the weather forecast is for a slight chance of thunderstorms. Bummer!!!  LOL.

Stay tuned.  Hope the rest of your week is sublimely perfect in every way.

Rim in the Rain

Kati started it.  She called raving about how wonderful the Mogollon Rim was on Tuesday.  Hey, let's go Saturday.  Rick and Barbara were going but Barbara was under the weather and they stayed home.  Rick thoughtfully called to let us know that there was a 50% chance of rain.  I was thrilled!!  I love weather.  Plus, that meant that there was a 50% chance of no rain (at least where we were).  Off we go with Kati in the back seat.

The Rim is gorgeous.  Kati was right.  Rick was right.  But, he should have stated that the chance of rain was 100% wherever we were.  I can smile now . . .

Rain was forecast to start around 3 PM.  It started in our area about 11 AM. But, We shot nicely along the Rim Road for a couple of hours.

Tom captured the same tree.  So now you can enjoy it two ways.  He got down really low for his shot.  Clouds look darker when you are on your belly!

As usual, we split up.  When I finally caught up with Kati she was hunkered over flowers.  She got enough jaw dropping over the edge Rim views on Tuesday and was now focused on something else.  So glad she did because I missed these lovelies entirely.

After shooting the Rim Road for a while we decided to head over to Woods Canyon Lake.  It was crowded!  We finally found a parking spot and rushed down to the lake's edge.  The clouds were threatening.  I asked Tom if I could borrow the 14-24mm lens (new).  He was sweet and said, "Of course."  But it made me nervous as I hustled down a somewhat steep rocky path.  I had just enough time to compose a shot and it started to sprinkle. We all headed back and met at the car, just as it started to rain hard.

We left the lake and headed to the Visitor's Center to get maps and a hat pin for my collection. No rain there . . . yet!  If you go to the Rim area please do stop in and get information and enjoy the deck that allows you to see for miles.  They even have a display so you can identify mountains.  Tom always, always, always finds an opportunity to shoot.  The railing!  I actually like it a lot.

Are you seeing a common theme here.  Dark clouds.  With map in hand we decided to check out Willow Springs Lake.  It is close to the highway and looking in that direction it looked like the weather would be more favorable.  NOT!  We barely grabbed our gear, donned our ponchos and KABOOM!  Back in the car!

Kati suggested we go down the hill to the area of the fish hatchery, Horton Creek and a small, but very nice waterfall that she had seen on an earlier trip.  It was a great idea and now that we know where to look it will be a definite stop on our next trip.  We would have explored more but the KABOOMs got us again and we retreated back up the hill to the car.  Tom did manage to get off one good one.

With that we headed back to Payson for lunch at El Rancho.  Pretty good Mexican food.  Part of their parking lot was flooded so we parked down the street. Clouds still menaced.  I thought of Rick's warning and smiled.  After lunch we decided to see what the weather was doing to the desert.  We checked out the area around Red Mountain and Kati took us to the site where she captured a sunrise time-lapse.  This rocky area juts out into the Salt Rive and is perfect for capturing the sun rising behind Four Peaks.  But, on a Saturday afternoon the place was jammed with people.  And, they put their ramadas, chairs and tables in the water!!!  Talk about staying cool!  Tom captured a photo of a woman sitting out in the river in a chair with a big plastic bowl that she dipped into the water and poured the water over her head.  Kids everywhere!  Loud music.  A real river front fiesta.  Notice the clouds.  It rained again.

After checking a few more sites we headed home.  Sort of.  A couple more shots along the road.

We hope Barbara is feeling better.  I have ordered better weather for us and we are headed back up to the Rim.  And I want to do a sunrise time-lapse.  Thanks for sharing.
